Hexagram 21Biting Through (Shì Kè)

  • justice
  • obstacle
  • decisiveness

Fire (clarity and clinging) over Thunder (arousing movement)

Meaning

An obstacle blocks union and must be bitten through. Energetic, just action—clear penalties fairly applied—restores order.

The image is an open mouth with an obstruction between the jaws — union is impossible until the thing in the way is decisively bitten through. Note the method: justice with proportion, thunder and lightning together, force and clarity in the same act.

Love & Relationships

Address the issue that stands between you directly; avoidance feeds it. The wedge between you — a third party, an old betrayal, a repeated lie — will not dissolve by itself. One direct conversation, however uncomfortable, beats a year of tense politeness.

Career & Work

Confront the blocker—a person, contract, or habit—with firm fairness. Identify the single blocker (a contract clause, an underperformer, a broken process) and remove it formally, with due process, in daylight. Half-measures teach obstacles that they are safe.

Advice

Be decisive but proportionate; justice unblocks the path. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Biting Through rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.

Changing Lines

Changing lines in Biting Through calibrate the bite — from mild correction (feet in the stocks) to the hardened offender deaf to every warning (the cangue that covers the ears). A moving line indicates how entrenched the obstacle is and how much force justice actually requires here.
