Hexagram 22 — Grace (Bì)
- beauty
- form
- essence
Mountain (keeping still) over Fire (clarity and clinging)
Meaning
Fire illuminates the mountain: beauty of form brings small success. Adornment pleases, but substance must underlie style.
Fire at the mountain's foot lights the surface beautifully but cannot see deep inside it — grace illuminates form, not substance. The hexagram ends, tellingly, in simple white: the highest ornament is the absence of ornament.
Love & Relationships
Romance and charm delight; ensure depth beneath the surface glow. Enjoy the candlelight phase for what it is, and schedule at least one conversation that has nothing beautiful about it. Charm that cannot survive plainness was never depth.
Career & Work
Presentation matters for minor gains; big decisions need substance over polish. Polish the deck, the design, the presentation — for small wins, form genuinely decides. For the career-sized decisions, insist on the unglamorous numbers underneath.
Advice
Honor beauty, but let simplicity and essence have the last word. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Grace rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Grace strip away layers of adornment — leaving the carriage to walk, the white horse approaching as a suitor not a robber, and the final grace of simple white. A moving line shows which decoration in your situation is ready to be set aside for essence.
