Hexagram 20 — Contemplation (Guān)
- observation
- perspective
- example
Wind (gentle penetration) over Earth (receptive devotion)
Meaning
Wind moves over the earth: survey the whole landscape. Contemplate deeply, and your sincere example itself becomes influence.
The hexagram's shape is a tower: a place built for seeing far, and for being seen from afar. Contemplation is double-edged — while you survey the landscape, everyone in the landscape is quietly studying you.
Love & Relationships
Step back and truly see each other; understanding precedes closeness. Observe your partner as if meeting them this year, not the year you met. People change in place, and love that stops looking stops seeing.
Career & Work
Study the system before intervening; leadership by example persuades. Before intervening in the system, map it: who really decides, what actually gets rewarded, where the information flows. A leader's visible standards do more managing than their meetings.
Advice
Look within as you observe without; what you model, others mirror. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Contemplation rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Contemplation grade the vantage point — the boy's naive glance, the narrow view through a door-crack, contemplation of your own life, and finally viewing your life as one who has stepped beyond it. A moving line asks how honestly and widely you are actually looking.
