Hexagram 12 — Standstill (Pǐ)
- stagnation
- withdrawal
- integrity
Heaven (creative strength) over Earth (receptive devotion)
Meaning
Heaven and earth do not commune; inferior influences dominate. Withdraw, conserve, and keep your virtue intact.
Standstill is Peace inverted: the same forces present but no longer speaking to each other. The instruction is triage — stop trying to fix the system and concentrate on keeping your own integrity uncorrupted by it.
Love & Relationships
Distance and miscommunication prevail; protect your heart and wait. Not every silence should be filled by force; some distances close only when both sides stop pushing. Stay kind, stay honest, and let time do the part that effort cannot.
Career & Work
Do not chase advancement now; retreat gracefully and keep standards high. In a stagnant organization, visibility buys nothing and compromise costs everything. Do excellent quiet work, decline the tainted shortcut, and keep your exit options current.
Advice
Endure the blockage without compromising principles; it will pass. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Standstill rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Standstill trace the blockage's life cycle — and the upper lines carry its most hopeful message: the standstill eventually serves the great person, and at last it tips over into joy. A moving line shows how far through the stagnation you have come and whether the thaw has secretly begun.
