Hexagram 52 — Keeping Still (Gèn)
- stillness
- meditation
- boundaries
Mountain (keeping still) over Mountain (keeping still)
Meaning
Mountain upon mountain: absolute stillness. Rest when it is time to rest, act when it is time to act—quiet the restless heart.
Mountain doubled: stillness so complete the text says one no longer feels one's body, moving through one's courtyard without seeing the people in it. This is not withdrawal from life but precision about it — rest exactly when rest is due, act exactly when action is due, and end the background hum of restlessness that corrupts both.
Love & Relationships
Give space and silence their place; stillness heals agitation. Some wounds in a relationship close only in silence; scheduled space is not distance but medicine. Practice being fully present without needing to fix, plan, or speak.
Career & Work
Pause initiatives; think in your office without chasing what's beyond it. Institute the genuine pause — the closed laptop, the finished workday, the strategy day with no deliverables. Thought composed in stillness is worth ten memos written in motion.
Advice
Still the spine, still the thoughts; peace precedes right movement. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Keeping Still rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Keeping Still move the stillness up the body — toes, calves, the hips whose forced rigidity is dangerous, the trunk, the jaws, and finally noble-hearted composure entire. A moving line shows where in yourself the restlessness still lives and whether your stillness is achieved peace or clenched suppression.
