Hexagram 40Deliverance (Xiè)

  • release
  • forgiveness
  • swiftness

Thunder (arousing movement) over Water (depth and danger)

Meaning

The storm breaks and tension releases. Resolve remaining matters swiftly, forgive misdeeds, and return to normal without dwelling.

Thunder and rain break the atmospheric pressure: deliverance is the first clear morning after a long storm. The hexagram's discipline is speed of completion — resolve the leftover business quickly and then, crucially, stop being a person in crisis.

Love & Relationships

Let grievances go; the thaw invites a fresh, lighter chapter. When the fight is over, let it actually be over: no anniversary re-prosecutions, no interest charged on forgiven debts. Lightness is a gift you give the relationship on purpose.

Career & Work

Clear backlogs fast and pardon errors; do not milk the crisis. Post-crisis, clear the backlog fast, run one honest retrospective, and publicly reset to normal. Teams take their cue from whoever exhales first.

Advice

After release, do not linger—complete, forgive, and move on. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Deliverance rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.

Changing Lines

Changing lines in Deliverance concern what the liberation still requires — the three foxes to be shot, the burden-bearer riding in a carriage who invites robbers, and the hawk on the high wall removed with one prepared shot. A moving line names the residual obstacle that must be dispatched before the release is complete.
