Hexagram 36 — Darkening of the Light (Míng Yí)
- adversity
- concealment
- inner light
Earth (receptive devotion) over Fire (clarity and clinging)
Meaning
The light sinks below the earth. In hostile conditions, veil your brilliance outwardly while keeping the inner lamp lit.
The sun fallen beneath the earth — intelligence operating in a time that punishes intelligence for showing itself. The historical model is the sage serving a tyrant: outward conformity, inward incorruptibility, and no visible glow to draw the arrow.
Love & Relationships
Guard tender feelings in a harsh season; loyalty survives underground. In a hostile environment — disapproving families, a harsh season of life — protect the relationship by lowering its profile, not its temperature. Loyalty in the dark is the deepest kind.
Career & Work
Do good work without display; visibility now attracts attack. Under bad management, brilliance displayed is brilliance targeted. Keep receipts, keep standards, keep quiet, and keep the exit mapped; eclipses end.
Advice
Be outwardly yielding, inwardly luminous; endure the eclipse. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Darkening of the Light rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Darkening of the Light follow the wounded light through the dark kingdom — the bird lowering its wings in flight, the wound in the thigh that still permits rescue, the prince Chi-tzu feigning madness to preserve his inner truth. A moving line shows how deep the darkness runs and which form of concealment your integrity requires.
