Hexagram 33Retreat (Dùn)

  • withdrawal
  • timing
  • dignity

Heaven (creative strength) over Mountain (keeping still)

Meaning

Dark forces advance; timely retreat is strength, not defeat. Withdraw with dignity, keeping small harms at distance.

The mountain rises under heaven, and heaven withdraws upward without hatred — retreat as the strong player's move, executed early and in good order. The dark force wins only against those who either fight it head-on or flee it in panic.

Love & Relationships

Create healthy distance from what diminishes you; retreat is not rejection. Distance from a corrosive dynamic is self-respect in motion, not abandonment. Withdraw without contempt: the door you close gently can be reopened; the one you slam cannot.

Career & Work

Pull back from losing battles; preserve resources for a better field. Leaving a losing position while you still have leverage is a promotion in disguise. Time your exit, secure references and relationships, and never let bitterness write your resignation letter.

Advice

Retreat early and gracefully; hatred is unnecessary, distance is enough. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Retreat rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.

Changing Lines

Changing lines in Retreat grade the quality of the withdrawal — caught at the tail in danger, held back by ties of affection, and at the summit the cheerful retreat of one who has truly let go. A moving line reveals what still binds you to the field you should be leaving.
